COMPARING AND CONTRASTING:
When comparing and contrasting two or more items (texts, characters, etc) you are looking for their similarities (how they are alike) and their differences. The Venn Diagram or an H-Chart would be the most appropriate (best) graphic organizer to use.

WRITING PROMPTS:
When you are answering a writing prompt you need to understand what type of writing is needed. We use four in our classroom. Narratives are for telling stories, whether real or imaginary. Expository writing is when you need to explain something to the reader. It is filled with true facts. Argumentative writing is when you need to express an opinion about a subject and 'argue' why your opinion is best. We will write all these types during the year.

PREPOSITIONS CAN BE TOUGH!
To decide if a word is a preposition, think about whether it shows where or when. The words following the preposition will make a prepositional phrase.

LOCATING THEME:
A theme is the lesson that the author wants you to learn from the text. To find the theme, ask yourself:
1. What did the characters learn during the story?
2. How did the characters change during the story?
3. Why did the characters act this way?
Once you look at the answers to these questions, you will have a good idea what the theme is in the text.

WHY READ?
You probably know that I believe daily reading is IMPORTANT!!! Read through this to see what reading only 20 minutes at home a night means to your future. But remember, I require 30 minutes a day in my classroom.

EXPOSITORY TEXT:
As a writer, how can you change the information in a text? You can list information in sequential order, which is in the order it happened; logical order, which is writing information in the order that makes sense; classification is where you group the information into categories; cause and effect is when you write the cause then tell what the effects were; compare and contrast is when you show how things are alike, then how they are different.
